Fast Track to a Career

Mar 23, 2011

Emily Shine was considering going back to school when she saw National’s new campus in SOUTH BEND and thought she would check it out. She had looked at a couple of schools in the local area, but after visiting National, Emily says with a smile, “I ended up liking this place the best!”

What impressed Emily the most was the close-knit community of the campus and how friendly everyone was. “I like how everyone here knows you and is willing to help in any way they can,” Emily states, “I know at some bigger colleges that’s harder to find with so many students.” But at National, Emily says, “everybody is really helpful here.”

With a three year old and a one and a half year old at home, having a supportive community at school to help her stay focused and instructors who know her make a big difference for Emily. “I also like the federal work study program,” Emily says, which allows her to work on campus, gaining experience while earning money to put towards her education.

Emily also likes that she can get a degree at National that is focused on a career and won’t waste any time getting her into the workforce. Knowing she enjoyed customer service and that “pharmacy isn’t going to go away,” Emily opted for the pharmacy technician diploma program that will allow her to graduate in a year.

“I have little ones at home,” Emily explains, “with it being a shorter time, instead of going for four years, it makes it easier.” Her ultimate goal is to get the training she needs for a stable job.

“I was lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom for the first two years,” Emily shares, “but I think it’s about time for me to help my husband support our family.”

With the uncertainty in the economy, Emily feels that her education at National has prepared her for a job in the medical field where a growing need for services is also opening up many job opportunities.

“There’s so many different areas [for pharmacy],” Emily states, “in retail or in the hospital so that gives me multiple options.” She looks forward in the coming years to making the most of her education and putting it to work in her local community.
