Talent and Passion for a New Career

Jun 29, 2011

Felecia Cole loves being challenged to excel, and with every new challenge she overcomes, she finds new opportunity. Felecia first enrolled in the medical assisting program at the KNOXVILLE CAMPUS after discovering a passion for helping people with special needs at her job with a regional non-profit. She knew she wanted a career in the medical field, but as a mother of four also knew that attending college was going to be difficult. However, at National she found the flexible schedule, personalized attention, and skills she needed to get her start in the medical career she always wanted.

Felecia’s first step towards her new career started with her externship at a private general practitioner’s office, and culminated in the physician offering her a full-time position when her externship ended. “I felt like the school did their job in preparing me to come out into the field,” Felecia states with certainty, “I think that our skills are excellent.” She thanks instructors like Susan Roy, who challenged Felecia to work hard and surpass her expectations for herself:  “It showed me that I really do have what it takes,” Felecia says with strength, “I put the work behind it and I was proud of myself and I was glad to have that encouragement from Ms. Roy.”

Not only does Felecia feel confident in her job, but she enjoys every minute of it: “It’s a rewarding experience,” she shares with a smile about her new career, “You never know what to expect day to day.” She uses both the hands-on medical knowledge and the medical office skills she learned in her medical assisting program to prepare patients for their appointments and record their information.

“I get their vital signs, draw blood, also give injections, I can do EKGs,” she pauses to take a breath and then says with a laugh, “I can do pretty much anything the doctor needs me to do to get things going.”

Looking down the road Felecia is excited about new challenges and new opportunities in the medical field. She plans on continuing her education and pursuing nursing degree. “I’m not going to stop. I will progress on,” she states with a huge smile, “I think this is my talent.”
